How to choose a refrigerated cake display

A good display cabinet shows the product at its best while keeping it safe. These are the checks that matter most on a busy counter.

  • Width and tiers: Count the cakes, slices and trays you display at peak, then choose a width and tier count. Four tiers show more in the same footprint; three tiers give taller shelves for larger cakes and easier reach.
  • Refrigerated or ambient: Cream, custard, mousse and cheesecake fillings are potentially hazardous foods and need to be held at 5°C or colder under the Australian Food Standards Code. Ambient stands do not suit them.
  • Service style: Check whether the cabinet is staff-served or self-service, and where the doors and access panels sit relative to your counter and staff position.
  • Glass, lighting and defrost: Look at the glass style, shelf lighting and defrost method. Fogging, glare and warm spots spoil both the display and the product.
  • Power and position: Check the data plate for electrical supply, keep condenser vents clear, and avoid direct sun and heat from ovens or espresso machines. Check the model's rated ambient temperature against your site.
  • Cleaning access: Choose a cabinet with removable shelves, drip trays and glass you can reach, so daily cleaning doesn't mean moving the display.

What to ask before you order

Cake Display Cabinets FAQs

What size cake display cabinet do I need?

Choose the width from the number of cakes and trays you display at peak, then check your counter space and delivery route. This range runs from 600mm to 1800mm, so most counters can fit a cabinet while leaving room to serve.

Do cake display cabinets need to be refrigerated?

Cakes with cream, custard, mousse or cheesecake fillings should be refrigerated at 5°C or colder under the Australian Food Standards Code. Dry-baked items can sit in an ambient display, so choose based on what you sell.

What is the difference between a 3-tier and 4-tier cake display?

A four-tier cabinet shows more product in the same width, while a three-tier gives taller shelves for larger cakes and easier reach. Choose by the tallest cake you display and how you serve.

Can I use a cake display fridge in a hot cafe or near a window?

Check the model's rated ambient temperature, keep the condenser vents clear and avoid direct sun and heat from ovens or espresso machines. An overloaded cabinet or one in a hot spot will struggle to hold temperature.

What should I ask a supplier before buying a cake display cabinet?

Ask for the model's electrical requirements, internal shelf dimensions, defrost type, glass and door details, delivery scope and warranty terms in writing. Also confirm whether it is staff-served or self-service.
